What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma, often referred to as the “silent thief of sight,” is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. What makes glaucoma particularly dangerous is that it usually develops slowly and painlessly. Many people experience no noticeable symptoms during the early stages, meaning vision can be permanently damaged before they realise anything is wrong.

Although vision loss to glaucoma cannot be restored, early diagnosis and timely treatment can significantly slow or prevent further vision loss.

Who Should Be Screened?

Regular comprehensive eye examinations are the best defence against glaucoma. You may be at higher risk if you:

  • Are over 40 years of age.
  • Have a family history of glaucoma.
  • Have diabetes or high blood pressure.
  • Have high eye pressure.
  • Have previously suffered an eye injury.
  • Have been using steroid medications for an extended period.

Even individuals without symptoms should undergo routine eye examinations, as glaucoma can only be detected through a comprehensive assessment by an eye care professional.
