At EyeCare Hospital, we’re proud to announce a groundbreaking advancement in eye care with the successful introduction of Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking (C3R) surgery, now available for the first time in the Maldives.
Led by our ophthalmologist and cornea specialist, Dr. Adib Uddin, this advanced treatment has already been successfully performed on more than 30 patients since its launch in March 2025. The inaugural procedure took place on 11 March 2025, marking a transformative moment in Maldivian eye care and bringing renewed hope to individuals affected by keratoconus.
This achievement continues EyeCare Hospital’s legacy of introducing first-in-Maldives procedures, following last year’s successful rollout of ROP laser treatment for premature babies—another national milestone in specialized eye care.

What is C3R?
C3R (Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking) is a minimally invasive treatment for keratoconus, a progressive eye condition where the cornea thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape, leading to blurred and distorted vision. Left untreated, keratoconus can severely impair daily activities and may eventually require a corneal transplant.
During the C3R procedure, vitamin B2 (riboflavin) eye drops are applied to the cornea and activated with a precise dose of UV-A light. This process strengthens the collagen fibers in the cornea, effectively stabilizing its structure and halting further progression of the disease.
“Keratoconus can have a life-altering impact especially on young adults. Through C3R, we’re able to offer a safe, effective solution that preserves vision and prevents further deterioration,” says Dr. Adib Uddin.
A First for the Maldives
The first procedure at EyeCare Hospital was performed on a 17-year-old patient from Malé who had been experiencing rapid vision loss. Following the surgery, the patient reported significant improvement in clarity and comfort, and their condition has since stabilized.
With each successful case, EyeCare Hospital continues to lead the way in specialized eye treatments and provide advanced care options that were previously unavailable within the country.
