Do You Still Need Glasses After Cataract Surgery? Understanding Your Lens Options

Cataract surgery is one of the most successful vision-restoring procedures in the world. But a common question we often hear is:

“Will I still need glasses after surgery?”

The short answer? It depends on the lens you choose.

At EyeCare Hospital, we offer a range of advanced intraocular lenses (IOLs)—monofocal, multifocal, and trifocal lenses—each designed to suit different lifestyles and visual needs. Here’s how the right lens can make life after cataract surgery crystal clear.

What Happens During Cataract Surgery?

During surgery, the eye’s cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial one called an intraocular lens (IOL). This new lens focuses light properly onto your retina, helping you see more clearly.

But not all lenses are the same.

The Three Main Types of Lenses:

🔹 Monofocal Lens

  • Corrects vision at a single distance (usually far)
  • Most common type of IOL
  • You’ll still need glasses for reading, using your phone, or any near tasks
  • Ideal for patients who are comfortable using glasses for certain activities

🔹 Multifocal Lens

  • Offers vision at multiple distances—far, intermediate, and near
  • Great for reducing dependence on glasses for most daily tasks like driving, cooking, reading a phone, or even grocery shopping
  • May still need mild glasses for very fine detail work (e.g., sewing,
    needlework)

🔹 Trifocal Lens

  • A step beyond multifocal, providing improved intermediate vision (computer distance)
  • Offers a seamless range of vision and greater independence from glasses
  • Particularly useful for people with active lifestyles who want visual freedom across all distances Like multifocals, some patients might still choose to wear glasses for very specific visual tasks

🔹 Enhanced Mono focal or Extended Depth of Focus( EDOF) Lens

 • Creates an elongated focus zone rather than distinct focal points
 • Provides continuous, smooth vision from distance to intermediate ranges (perfect for computer work and screen time)
 • Offers improved night vision compared to some multifocals
 • Reading glasses might still be needed for very fine close-up tasks
 • Ideal for patients who prioritize high-quality distance and intermediate vision without the halos and glare sometimes associated with multifocal lenses

So, Will You Still Need Glasses?

It depends on the lens or IOL being used.

For Monofocal:  Far vision is clear, Near glasses are required

For EDOF/ Enhanced monofocals : Far and intermediate vision is clear, near glasses are required

For Trifocal: Far, intermediate and near vision are clear. Near glasses might be required for very fine work. Glares can be there at times with a Trifocal
IOL
