A three-day Surgical Eye Camp held from 26 to 28 September at Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital brought cataract surgery and essential eye care closer to the Thinadhoo community.
During the camp, nine older persons underwent cataract surgery. The camp also provided 27 eye consultations, including consultations for pre-registered patients and community members, as well as seven refractions.

Led by Aged Care Maldives and funded by Atmosphere Foundation, the initiative brought together EyeCare Hospital and Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital. Dr. Arjun Malla, a specialist in paediatric ophthalmology and cataract surgery from EyeCare Hospital, performed the procedures alongside the clinical team from Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital, who hosted the camp and provided the facilities and support.
For the older persons who received surgery, having care available on their home island meant avoiding travel elsewhere for the procedure and staying close to their families. They also received post-operative guidance and medication to support their recovery.
At EyeCare Hospital, we remain committed to working with partners to make quality eye care more accessible across the Maldives.
We are grateful to Aged Care Maldives, Atmosphere Foundation and Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital for helping bring this camp to Thinadhoo.
