Keratoconus: What You Need to Know About This Silent Vision Thief

Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition where the normally round, dome-shaped cornea becomes thin and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape. This abnormal curvature distorts how light enters the eye, leading to blurry vision, sensitivity to light, and difficulty with night vision.

Keratoconus often begins in the teenage years or early twenties. But because its early symptoms mimic common vision problems like astigmatism or myopia (short-sightedness), it’s frequently misdiagnosed or left untreated until it progresses.

In advanced stages, glasses and regular contact lenses no longer help and without timely treatment, permanent vision loss or corneal scarring may occur.

Key Signs and Symptoms to Watch Out For:
🔹 Frequent prescription changes
🔹 Blurry or distorted vision
🔹 Increased light sensitivity
🔹 Halos or ghosting around lights
🔹 Difficulty driving at night
🔹 Eyestrain and headaches

Who’s at Risk?
While anyone can develop keratoconus, certain groups are more prone:

  • Teens and young adults (ages 10–25)
  • People with a family history of keratoconus
  • Individuals with frequent eye rubbing (due to allergies, eczema, etc.)
  • Patients with Down syndrome or connective tissue disorders

Diagnosis: It Starts with a Comprehensive Eye Exam
At EyeCare Hospital, we use corneal topography which is a painless imaging technique which maps the surface curvatature of the cornea,  to detect keratoconus, even in its earliest stages. Our advanced diagnostic tools allow us to track subtle changes in corneal shape over time.

Early detection is crucial. It opens the door to treatments that can stop keratoconus from getting worse.
